The goal in kindergarten is to help children foster a life-long love for learning. We know that kindergarten students are excited to explore the world around them, and we encourage them to ask questions and find answers. The children grow in faith by learning about Jesus and they learn how to use Jesus' example to treat others with love.
Throughout the year, students become emergent readers and writers as they expand their knowledge of reading readiness skills and learn to express their ideas through writing accompanied with related illustrations. The students develop beginning numeracy skills as they practice counting, adding, and subtracting. In science, the students explore the world around them by asking questions and thinking like a scientist. The main focus of social studies instruction is for the children to explore the community in which they live..
1st Grade
First grade students are eager to grow in their love for Jesus by learning more stories about Him and then applying that learning to their interactions with their peers.
Instruction in Reading/English Language Arts class is grounded in phonics and language development. The goal is for the children to become independent readers who are able to comprehend the written word. The children also learn and practice the steps in the writing process. In math, the students continue to learn how to add and subtract, and they develop strong strategies for solving story problems.
There are many topics that the students explore in science related to space. They also begin to learn some of the major points in history.
2nd Grade
In second grade, the students focus on preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and for First Eucharist. These important faith steps make second grade an exciting year! The children learn more about their faith, and they also learn to read fluently and with proper inflection. Students also focus on strengthening the writing skills that have been introduced in the previous years. In math, the students increase their ability to add and subtract with larger numbers; additionally, they continue to build strategies to solve story problems. The children also enjoy learning how to tell time fluently.
The children learn more about the world around them through their studies in social studies and science.
K-2 Pro-Social Skills
In all three grades, the faculty help the students develop strong social skills. The faculty help children to learn how to build positive relationships with their peers as well as how to resolve conflicts in positive ways.
