Prospective parents and students will be invited to tour the school to meet teachers and visit classrooms.

Welcome to our website! Below is some information you may find useful:

Academic Focus: Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic School promotes its mission of academic and spiritual growth and community involvement to all students. We offer a Resource program to support struggling students, and challenge those who excel in their studies.

The school is a diverse community of children from different socio-economic backgrounds, where a well-rounded student experience is sought for all. Besides a core curriculum of science, math, language arts, social studies and religion, we offer PE, music, and art. Computer skills are taught in all classes using the school’s two computer labs, and junior high students receive special computer classes in preparation for high school.

Our test scores indicate a school that celebrates its diversity, and seeks as its goal to improve all who come to learn. The most recent standardized test scores indicate that nearly 75% of our students perform better than the national average of their peers. Other observations:

  • As a child progresses through the grades at OMOS, their learning seems to accelerate. For example, on average, students at OMOS may be at the 3.8 Grade Equivalency level in a particular area in 3rd grade, but at the 10.7 Grade Equivalency level in 8th grade. In other words, the differential between what the student knows and what they are expected to know grows as they move from one grade to the next.
  • There are 42 measurements of Grade Equivalency, one for each subject in each grade. The OMOS average Grade Equivalency meets or exceeds the diocesan average in 41 of those measurements.
  • With respect to student growth from year to year in each subject area for each grade, OMOS out-performs the diocesan average almost 85% of the time.

Nearly all of our graduates continue into college-prep environments, where most enroll in honors and AP classes. Included in our 8th grade courses of study are algebra, literature, and economics. Our students are prepared for success at the next level.

Spiritual Focus: The students at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic School have daily religion classes and, as a community, attend weekly Mass. But in addition to these events, our faith and morality are infused throughout the school’s curriculum. Connections are made between Catholic Social Teachings and the core subjects, and students regularly participate in corporal works of mercy through outreach projects such as making sandwiches for the Casa Maria soup kitchen, supporting the parish mission in Haiti, and organizing food drives for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Sacramental preparation occurs in the second grade for First Eucharist and Reconciliation, and in junior high for Confirmation.

In addition to students taking an active role at the weekly school Masses, they participate in other liturgical events including El Dia de los Muertos, All Saints Day, Las Posadas, and May Crowning.

Registration process: The school begins the registration process in early February. Items needed for registration:

  1. Completion of registration packet (available at school office), with the registration fee of $300 (per family),
  2. Student’s most recent report card,
  3. Scheduling of visitation day.
Upon completion of the visitation day, the student will be enrolled for next year after a review of academic records and assessment results. If the student is not accepted for enrollment, the registration fee will be refunded.

Waiting Lists: The school has had waiting lists for several grades in each of the last few years. Because of our preschool, we tend to fill our Kindergarten classes first. With respect to preference given on waiting lists, the following order is provided:
  1. Siblings of current students,
  2. Preschool students,
  3. Parishioner families.
Besides the above, new families are registered on a first-come, first-served basis. A family is not considered to be on the waiting list until the registration packet with the registration fee is submitted to the school office.

School tours: For those families interested in visiting our campus, tours are available by contacting the school office at 747-1027.

Visitation Day: All prospective students should plan on spending a day at the school, with the class they would be enrolling if registering at our school. Prospective students should wear dress code clothing (khaki or blue pants, white or navy polo) and bring a lunch and snack.
If during the summer, the student need only come to the school to be given an assessment of academic level. This assessment usually takes about 90 minutes.

Tuition: Individual student tuition rates for 2012/2013 starts at $3625 (parishioner rate). Multiple child discounts are offered. Tuition can be paid annually, semi-annually, or in ten (10) monthly installments.

Financial Aid: There is financial aid available for incoming students, available through the Catholic Tuition Support Organization. It is available on a first come, first served basis, and is based upon financial need as determined by a third party organization. Application forms are available in the school office.

Parent Communications: The school uses Renweb, an internet-based software that allows parents to access their student’s academic records, homework, announcement and bulletins from their personal computers at home or at the office. Parents can also access the school’s Hot Lunch Program’s menu to order student lunches on Renweb.
