We recognize that remote learning is a new process for everyone. The teachers and administration want to see everyone be successful, and we do not want the format for the learning to negatively impact a student's grades. Today, Governor Ducey announced that all schools in Arizona will be closed through April 10th. Beginning Monday, March 23rd, we will begin remote learning for students. The date that we are scheduled to return is April 13th, but that is subject to change based on how the pandemic unfolds. The end of the remote learning will be determined in consultation with Fr. Arnold, the Office of Catholic Schools, and the health department. The school is regularly coordinating with Fr. Arnold, the Office of Catholic Schools, and the health department since this is a rapidly evolving situation. Please be aware that as information surfaces we will communicate changes to families as quickly as possible. The National School Lunch Program contacted us this week, and we will be able to provide the breakfast and lunch program to all families during the school closure. The breakfast and lunch program is free for all students regardless of income during the school closure. If you would like for your child to receive the lunch and breakfast, please order the meal in Renweb by 10:00 a.m. the day prior to ensure that the staff has time to plan to cook the proper amount of food. Food will be available to pick-up food from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Students will be able to pick up lunch and the breakfast for the following day during that time. Current Context

National School Lunch Program for K-8 Due to the fact that the entire state has closed their schools, the National School Lunch Program is working at the state level to identify the schools that will remain open to serve lunch. Once we receive the information, we will share the details with families. Please make sure to complete the survey related to the need for family support so we can assist with this coordination and sharing the school that will be serving lunch closest to your home. Supporting Children During the Pandemic Social Distancing, what does that mean? There has been so much discussion surrounding the importance of social distancing as a method to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Social distance refers to the importance of separating from the larger community. As schools close, it is important that families work together to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by washing hands, keeping a distance from others, and avoiding large groups of people. These directives are in place for the next three weeks, until April 6, 2020, at which time they will be reviewed and either brought to a close or extended. This effectively puts us a “ Level 3” in our response to the Coronavirus challenge and includes, but is not limited to:
I believe these directives, while a hardship and deeply regrettable for us all, are sensible, substantially consistent with directives for the other Catholic diocese in Arizona, and in line with the spirit of public health directives. -Bishop Weisenburger School Scheduled Events Many families have been planning for special events that happen in the spring to include the middle school play, 8th grade promotion, the preschool celebration, and the kindergarten celebration. The school administration is coordinating with Fr. Arnold, the Office of Catholic Schools, and the Health Department to make decisions regarding these events. The decision to cancel or modify any of the events would be based solely on the health and safety of the students and families. At this time, the Office of Catholic Schools is strongly recommending that all events be suspended or cancelled until further notice. There is no way to know how the pandemic will be impacting Tucson in May, so the special events may be cancelled this year. In the event that the recommendations from the Office of Catholic Schools changes, Fr. Arnold and I have plans in place which would allow for modified versions of the special events. Some of the options include limiting the people in attendance and videotaping the event so that other family members can participate remotely. Sacraments Students have been preparing for 1st Eucharist and Confirmation this year, and the dates for the sacraments are this spring. We realize that families may be traveling from out of town to be present, and every effort will be made to provide families with updates related to potential changes in the date of a sacrament. Any changes to the date of 1st Eucharist and/or Confirmation would be communicated by Fr. Arnold or Bishop Weisenburger. At this time, the two sacrament dates are still scheduled; however, it is likely that there may be some changes in the events based on the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus this spring. Some of the changes may include limiting the number of people in attendance and videotaping so that others can be remotely present. There is a chance that the dates for the sacraments may be moved based on the recommendations of the Fr. Arnold and Bishop Weisenburger. Today the report cards went home for all the students in grade K-8. Please review your child's academic progress, and plan to return the signed envelope to your child's homeroom teacher by Friday, March 6th. Parents can keep the copy of the report card at home. Summer will be here before we know it! This year, Our Mother of Sorrows is offering summer camps for students in preschool through grade 6. The camps are one week long. Families are welcome to register for the half day and full day options. The preschool camp will explore the ocean, the desert, fire, as well as the Vacation Bible School Camp entitled Rocky Railway. This camp is for students ages 3 to 5. Each week will include music, stories, special guests, messy fun, art, and more! The camps for students entering first to sixth grade will have sessions that focus on STEM, music, art, paper crafts and poetry, lego building and design, and the Vacation Bible School Camp entitled Rocky Railway. If you have walked around the school lately, you will see the halls filled with beautiful artwork. We have some talented artists here at Our Mother of Sorrows. Well, now their work is on display at the Wilmot LIbrary for all to see.

As we prepare for next year, I invite all our families to consider making a dollar for dollar tax credit to the Catholic Tuition Support Organization (CTSO). Most of our students receive some financial support from tax credits to attend Our Mother of Sorrows. By designating some or all of your state income tax to CTSO, you are helping to support the children who attend Our Mother of Sorrows. The best part of the donation to CTSO is that it does not cost you anything additional. You are simply telling the state that you want your taxes to go to CTSO in order to help a family afford a Catholic education. This morning, we recognized the students who earned Honor Roll and the Schoolwide Learning Expectations. Students in grades 5-8 are recognized for earning honor roll when they earn all A's and B's in their core subjects. Students earn high honor roll when they earn all A's. The Schoolwide Learning Expectations "SLE" Award recognizes students in grades K-8 who have gone above and beyond this trimester in their pursuit to grow in faith, lovingly serve others, and grow in knowledge. All students are expected to work on growing in these three areas, and each child reflected on his or her growth over the course of the trimester on the "SLE" report card which was sent home with the academic report card. The "SLE" Award is a way for students to be recognized for really working hard in one of these three areas during the fall. Congratulations to our students who have earned their "SLE" Award and Honor Roll this trimester! Please review your child's report card and send the envelope back to school. If you would like to schedule a conference with your child's teacher, please indicate it on the envelope. Now that the second trimester is beginning, it is also time for the second round of MAP tests for students in grades 3-8. Over the next few weeks, grades will be scheduled to take the test. Please be on the look-out from your child's teacher for when your child is scheduled to take his or her MAP test. We ask that each child do his or her best on the test, so it is beneficial to get plenty of sleep the night before. It is also important to eat a good breakfast before the test since our brains work much better when we are rested and full of energy! Following the second round of tests, we will recognize each child that meets or exceeds their MAP growth goal. Now that the weather is cooling down, we ask that parents review the handbook regarding the policy for sweatshirts, sweaters, and jackets. Only sweatshirts and sweaters that are navy with the OMOS school logo or solid dress code color are permitted. Sweatshirts may have a hood, but there should be no front pocket. The students have worked so hard this trimester, and I hope that as we begin this second trimester that each child continues to set goals and work toward their academic goals. This has been a busy week. On Wednesday, the kindergarten students concluded their "community helpers" unit by coming to school dressed as a community helper. The classrooms were full of teachers, doctors, nurses, police officers, fire fighters, and members of the SWAT team. On Thursday, the students buzzed about their plans for the evening. Some of the kids informed me that they would dressed as Buzz, Belle, and Superman at home. Then, Mrs. Baker concluded our faculty and staff pumpkin design contest by announcing the winners. Congratulations to our creative faculty members! 1st Place: "Nemo" 2nd Place: "Winnie the Pooh" 3rd Place: "Pirate Ship" Today, the school was filled with Saints and Angels. The children were so excited to come dressed as their favorite saint including Mary our Mother, St. Augustine, St. Patrick, and St. Lucy. It was a beautiful sight to see so many saints and future saints gather for our All Saints Mass today. To conclude our week, we also celebrated the winners of the Día de Muertos coloring contest in grades 1-4. Congratulations to our winners! Their work is proudly displayed on the Ofrenda in the courtyard along with many of the traditional images for Día de Muertos. At Our Mother of Sorrows, our students have worked hard to grow in knowledge during this trimester. I have seen our children beginning to master multiplication facts, their letters sounds, complex algebraic expressions, and learn the cause and effects to historical decisions. Outside the classroom, the children have also been growing in knowledge. This season many of our fourth to eighth grade students have participated on the basketball and volleyball teams. The teams have learned how to dribble, bump, and work as a team to compete against other teams in our league. Over the next few weekends, our students will compete in the JV and Varsity tournaments. Best of luck to our student athletes! Go Mustangs! We also had several students register and compete in the Our Mother of Sorrows Talent Show at the Fiesta. Congratulations to two of our middle school students who shared their talents! Thank you to our Student Council for organizing our first pep rally of the year. The knock-out tournament was fun for everyone. Congratulations to our winners! During the week, the stalls in the kindergarten bathroom were replaced. This is part of our ongoing plan to update the school campus. On Monday, I hope our kindergarten students will enjoy the new bathroom stalls.
Tomorrow, we welcome Ms. Scalise to our staff. Lisa Scalise will be our receptionist in the afternoons. Ms. Scalise is a health aide for TUSD during the day, and she has a range of previous experience including working for the police department and 911 dispatch. Our office will now stay open until 6:00 p.m. which means that beginning Monday, the side gate will no longer be open after dismissal. Instead, families who are picking up children from sports, tutoring, after school, or any other meeting will go through the front office. This is part of our plan to increase safety at our school. Ms. Scalise will buzz families and visitors into the office. Finally, we have Fiesta coming up in one week! We hope you will join for some family fun. This week, Mrs. Lanik sent home an email with a sign-up for volunteering for the Fiesta. It takes everyone to make this event a success, so please consider helping to make the event great! The Tucson Police Department will be presenting "Run, Hide, Fight" which will focus on how people can stay safe in an emergency. The presentation will cover the logistics of how to increase the rate of your survival should you ever find yourself in a situation where there is an act of violence in a public place such as a movie theater, restaurant, shopping plaza, etc. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to Crystal Lanik at [email protected] of by filling out the form on our the home page of the website: www.omosschool.com by October 22nd. The Fiesta is scheduled for October 18-20th. This is a huge parish event that focuses on bringing the entire community together, and this year the proceeds will help support campus security as well as ongoing campus landscaping. The event includes food, live performances, a cake walk, bingo, face painting, bounce houses, game booths, and a white elephant sale. All are invited to enjoy the fun and festivities! The three day event is only possible due to the support from all the members of the community. As a member of the school community, we are in need of your help!
All family volunteers can earn LMS hours as part of their family commitment. Families can earn up to 20 hours for the Fiesta toward their Fall commitment. Fiesta está programada para el 18 a 20 de Octubre.
