PHILOSOPHY:

In my classes, students learn conversational skills, using activities, story-telling, role-playing, songs, etc.  I believe that learning a language should be dynamic and fun.  It is my hope that the children bring that enthusiasm home and practice their newfound language skills.

Language is not only words, but an understanding of the people, history and culture of that language.  To that end, we not only concentrate on the skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking, but do a variety of activities focusing on Hispanic culture and traditions.

MATERIALS:

Notebook

Two pocket folder

EXPECTATIONS AND GRADING:

1.  Participation:  There will a participation grade each week.  Speaking a foreign language takes practice, not only in speaking, but in listening, reading and writing.  We learn by making mistakes and trying again.  No one will be perfect. I don’t expect perfection.  I expect effort.  Students will receive points for each class.  These points are for passive attention (paying attention, having all materials ready and actively listening in the classroom) and active participation (participating in group response, participating in activities and answering questions.)  If  a student disrupts the class, I will give him/her a warning.  If the behavior continues, the student will lose a point.  I will always put an explanation of the point loss on Renweb so parents are informed.

2.  Homework:  We will rarely have homework.  Most of the work in the class will focus on speaking and using the vocabulary that we are learning.  We will have in-class activities that will be graded.

3.  Tests/quizzes:  I need to know if you understand what we are doing so we can move on to other things.  Therefore, we will have pop vocabulary quizzes.  It will only happen after we have thoroughly gone over the vocabulary and you are comfortable with it.

4.  AbsenteeismIf you are absent, please check with your teacher.  I will leave any handouts with them.  Also, check my website.  I will have the vocabulary and activities that we are doing for the week on the site.  It is your responsibility to get the vocabulary!!

5.  Extra creditnope!  I believe you should do the work and participate during the class period.  Occasionally, I will do a activity and give everyone the opportunity for bonus points.

6.  Help-Don’t understand?  Totally confused?  Don’t be embarrassed.  Ask questions in class.  Ask me to slow down.  Stop me in the hall.  Talk to me after school.  Chances are, if you have the question, someone else does too.

General Guidelines:

1.  Raise your hand to answer a question.  Listen respectfully if someone else is talking.

2.  No laughing if someone pronounces a word or phrase wrong.  Everyone will do it.  It takes courage to speak up and try.

3.  Come prepared for class with your materials.

4.  No chewing gum or eating food during class.  This is not only rude, it affects your pronunciation.

5.  If an administrator, guest or teacher enters the room, I expect you to greet him in Spanish.  I expect you to greet me in Spanish when you see me.

6.  Cheating or plagiarism will not be tolerated.  If you choose to do this, you will receive a zero for the activity and your parents will be notified.

Learning a language is fun but it requires constant practice and effort.  I want you to succeed!  ¡Vamos a divertirnos!  We’re going to have fun!
